What is a CO2 Reduction Certificate?

A CO2 Reduction Certificate is a certificate that proves that the owner of the certificate has reduced Green House Gases.

What is the differenct between a CO2 Reduction Certificate and a Carbon Offset Certificate ?

A CO2 REDUCTION CERTIFICATE proves that a certain amount of Emission Credits have been CANCELLED by the owner. On the other hand A CARBON OFFSET CERTIFICATE proves that a certain amount of Emission Credits have been RETIRED by the owner. Please refer to the question What is the difference between cancelling and retiring Emission Credits? for a more detailed explanation.

What is a Sub Certificate?

A Sub Certificate exists to divide an ordinary Certificate into smaller lots such as units of kilograms. A Sub Certificate will have a 14 digit ID ( Ordinary Certificates have 8 digit ) "*" mark on its weight.


How is a Sub Certificate issued?

The following shows an easy flow describing the steps to how a Sub Certificate ends up in your hands.

  • 1-(1) CO2 Reduction Projects are planned and executed.
  • 1-(2) The "United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change" or UNFCCC will review and register this project and issue Emission Reduction Credits.
  • 2. TCO2 will buy those credits
  • 3. TCO2 will cancel these credits so that nobody can use them
  • 4. TCO2 will issue one or more Sub Certificates to a Certificate Buyer
  • 5. The Certificate Buyer will give or sell you a Sub Certificate
